What is a carpet square? It's a piece of carpet available in an 18x18 square shape. The squares are laid neatly next to one another to give the impression of a continuous carpet, in the same fashion as tile.
They are often referred to as carpet tiles as well.
They're available in many different colors and textures, but are more often purchased in textures that stand up well to wear and tear, rather than in plush textures.

Carpet Squares - An Alternative Flooring Choice
Typically, carpet squares have been used in commercial or business areas where there is a great deal of foot traffic. A perfect example would be an airport. If you look closely, you can see that the carpet is laid in squares rather than one large roll laid from end to end. The main reason for this is to allow for removing a square of the carpet that is stained or an entire patch of carpet that has been beaten down without removing the entire area of carpet.
Until recently, carpet squares were not often pitched to residential clients, but in recent years they have become a more popular option for homeowners. Here are a few reasons to consider carpet squares in your home:
Carpet and Rental Property
If you own a rental property, you know the pain and the high cost of having to replace the carpet flooring each time a resident vacates the property. Unfortunately, this is often necessary for just a few small areas of the house that have stains or have been highly trafficked. If you go with carpet squares instead, you can help to add onto the overall life of the carpet, only replacing the areas that have been badly damaged during the tenants time there.
Carpet Squares and Indoor Pets
If you have indoor pets in your home, you know that there is a good likelihood you will have more dirt and grime brought into the house. This is especially true of dogs that come in and out on a regular basis. There may be a particular door and room that the dogs normally enter when coming inside. The area nearby the door may see a great deal of wear and tear, but the rest of the rooms carpet may remain nice and neat. You'll save yourself a great deal of money but installing carpet squares in this particular room and just replacing those particular squares as needed.
Carpet Mobility
If you have decided to install area rugs or carpet overtop of linoleum flooring or hardwood floors in an area of your home, you may want to consider simply installing carpet squares. This will keep you from ruining the perfectly good flooring already in place, but will allow you to create the look that you want. When you move out of the home, you can simply pack the carpet squares up into a box and take them with you, leaving the floor as it was previously.
You may also want to consider this if you move frequently and have created a look in a room that you would like to maintain from house to house.
The Unique Look of Carpet Squares
If you can't find carpet that you like and haven't found a rug that you want to spend a great deal of money on, consider putting these squares together in a neat pattern with two or more different colors of squares. You can create the look of a square patterned rug but at a fraction of the cost. Each individual square can also be changed out if you have a bad stain, whereas with a rug, you are stuck with that stain if it does not come out!
