As if choosing carpet wasn't difficult enough, making sure you're getting a good deal on carpet prices makes it even more difficult to make a final decision.
Carpet prices typically start around $8 a square yard and go up from there, but it isn't always this simple. Some carpet companies don't charge by the square yard, but by square foot instead.
By square foot, the prices usually range from $2.50-$13 a square foot. This makes it difficult to go about comparing prices from different carpet companies.

What you Should Know about Carpet Prices
It's easiest to calculate by square foot. To do so you will simply multiply the length by the width of the flooring area needing to be carpeted. Your first measurements will be taken by inches and should not be rounded up to feet, as you need exact measurements to get the right area and the right pricing.
There are several other factors to consider in determining whether or not you're getting a good deal on your carpet. These factors include the type of carpeting, including the thickness, type of fibers and materials used to make the carpet flooring, as well as the extra protections included, and the brand name of the carpet.
Prices are often determined by the retailer in regards to the life of the carpet. Of course the lowest priced carpets are likely to have less life, especially in high traffic areas. This may also mean it will require more maintenance and upkeep than a more high quality carpet would cost. The more high priced carpets may seem more overwhelming to purchase upfront, but if you consider that they will last longer and should require less maintenance, such as carpet cleaning and stain guards, then it may be worth it to purchase a more expensive carpet.
When determining how much you want to pay for your carpet, you also need to consider what the carpet will be used for in a particular room. If the room will be a high traffic area, although it may seem reasonable to purchase a more high quality carpet, even a high quality carpet may not significantly extend the carpet life. In this case, you may instead want to consider a middle of the road carpet or a carpet where you can purchase extra protections on it.
The same goes for purchasing carpet that will be used in a rental property. Since you'll likely remove the carpet in between renters or after a few short years of renters, there is no need to purchase top quality carpet. This would simply be a waste of money.
In areas of the house such as bedrooms that don't see as much traffic, a high quality carpet could last for years. The same holds true for places like the dining room or a formal living room. The carpet life in these rooms is likely to be somewhere between 10-15 years, so buying a carpet that will withstand the test of time is a good idea.
Other important considerations for carpet pricing include the cost of the actual carpet padding, the removal of the old carpet and installation of the carpet. These can sometimes be as expensive as the actual carpet costs. Some companies may charge by the square foot for installation and removal, while others will charge an hourly labor cost. Carpet padding usually costs between $5-$10 a square yard.
