How to Care for Your Bamboo Floor
The first step in care of your bamboo floors happens immediately after floor installation has been completed. Because all the furnishings have been removed from the room in which the bamboo floor was installed, it is now time to replace the furniture. No matter how heavy or bulky a piece of furniture may be, avoid the impulse to drag it across the floor. This practice will cause a deep, permanent scar or gouge in your brand new flooring -- a truly heartbreaking experience should it happen to your new floor. Instead, use furniture dollies, padding under furniture being moved, or carry the furnishings in such a way that no part of the furniture touches your new floor.
Heavy pieces of furniture should have felt or rubber pads placed underneath each leg, along edges or other places where the furniture contacts the bamboo. This prevents the weight of the furniture from pressing into the bamboo over time, leaving an indentation.
It is a good idea to place area rugs in high traffic areas to prevent wear patterns in the bamboo floor finish. Be sure to select rugs that have non-abrasive backing material or place the rugs on area rug padding to prevent scarring your floor. Purchase quality throw rugs and accent rugs because some cheap products have chemicals in the backing that can react with the floor finish.
If you love houseplants be sure to place saucers under each pot and ensure any water splashed when watering the plants is dried immediately. The same goes for any drinks or food that may be spilled on the bamboo floor; immediate cleanup ensures a long lasting finish.
Do not use your bamboo floor as a work space for children coloring, painting, crafts, or other activities that may cause permanent coloring or glue to contact the bamboo. It can be difficult, if not impossible, to remove stains from markers or paint and removing glue is no easy task either.
To clean your floor thoroughly, use wood floor cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer of your bamboo floor material. Tape the customer service number inside a kitchen cabinet or pantry door so you always have it handy should you question whether a product you wish to try is safe to use. In between thorough cleanings, you can simply clean with a dust mop, or vacuum with the beater bar brush raised to prevent contact with the bamboo floor. Never use wax, oily soap or detergents, ammonia, abrasive cleaners, dish or laundry detergents, pine cleaners, or degreasing products on your bamboo floor unless your flooring manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so in order to deal with a special situation or stain.
Never allow anyone wearing golf shoes, athletic shoes with cleats, spike heels with tiny tips, roller skates or rollerblades to walk or move on your bamboo floor. These are sure to damage the surface.
If your bamboo floor loses its shine over time, contact the manufacturer to learn of any recommended products you can apply. However, to be safe and ensure your beautiful investment is properly restored, you might prefer to turn to a bonded, insured professional floor restoration service.
