Deck Stairs & Deck Steps
After looking at our free deck designs, there are many areas around your deck where stairs and steps may be needed. These range from one step to a complete staircase depending on the size of the incline.

If you’ll only need one or two steps, the easiest way to build them is to construct small platforms in the deck by using 2 x 6 or 2 x 8 joists. These dimensions will create steps that are 5 ˝ inches and 7 ˝ inches deep. This depth is the most common depth in riser heights. If you’ll need more than 2 steps, you should use carriages (or stringers) to build your steps. The following are ideas in simple steps and stair construction. All can be modified to fit individual needs of a deck.

Other finishing details that can be considered when building your deck are benches and planters. There are many ideas that can be used when making these a permanent fixture of your deck. Be sure and plan these as well in the original design so you can attach to underlying joists to secure the benches and planters.
